Le concept de biosécurité en pisciculture marine : prévention de l'encéphalite virale chez l'ombrine subtropicale (Sciaenops ocellatus) en Martinique ArchiMer
Adee, Fabrice.
In 1985, red drum (Sciaenops ocellatus) was introduced in Martinique in arder to replace sea bass fish farming. Nodavirus antibodies were detected in the broodstock at the IFREMER station in Robert. Nodavirus is responsible for viral nervous necrosis, a disease that is spreading quickly in worlwide marine aquaculture. A biosecurity process was initiated at the Robert hatchery to select seronegative breeders and produce nodavirus free larvae. This process, based on a serological follow-up of fish antibodies by ELISA, allowed a reduction of the number of seropositive fish. A complementary serological study revealed a low incidence of nodavirus contamination in nodavirus free larvae placed in sea cages on different production sites

DIAGNOSTIC DEVELOPMENT FOR WILD FIRE SURVEILLANCE Rev. Protección Veg.
Álvarez,Elba; Iglesia,Aleika.
Information about the characterization and diagnostic of wild fire was compiled. This bacterial disease, exotic for Cuba, is caused by Pseudomonas syringae pv. tabaci. The species Pseudomonas syringae is traditionally divided into pathovars depending on the host range and symptoms. For its study, different phenotypic and genotypic methods are used. Such methods allow the traditional taxonomic confirmation of this pathovar within the species. Serological and molecular techniques such as: ELISA tests, immunofluorescence, polymerase chain reaction (PCR) are also used for the characterization and detection of the bacterium. Such techniques are very useful and sensible for the diagnostic.

Toxoplasmosis in squirrel monkeys: histological and immunohistochemical analysis Ciência Rural
Andrade,Márcia Cristina Ribeiro; Coelho,Janice Mery Chicarino de Oliveira; Amendoeira,Maria Regina Reis; Vicente,Regiane Trigueiro; Cardoso,Célia Virgínia Pereira; Ferreira,Paola Cristina Brandão; Marchevsky,Renato Sergio.
Necropsy findings in three cases of naturally occurring toxoplasmosis in squirrel monkeys (Saimiri sciureus) obtained as wild catches from the Amazon region were described. Histopathological evaluation of the liver, spleen, kidneys and mesenteric lymph nodes showed multiple foci of inflammation and necrosis. Typical, well-defined morphologic Toxoplasma gondii cysts and free forms of the parasite were found by immunoperoxidase staining within inflammatory infiltrates. The presence of T. gondii in the studied colony could severely influence the results of experiments performed in the animals.

Natural infection of Viola cornuta (Violaceae) with Cucumber mosaic virus, subgroup I Biocell
Arneodo,Joel; de Breuil,Soledad; Lenardon,Sergio; Conci,Luis.
Plants of Viola cornuta displaying typical virus symptoms were observed during spring 2003 in a plant nursery in Córdoba, central Argentina. Electron microscopic examinations of symptomatic leaf samples revealed the presence of isometric virus-like particles about 30 nm in diameter. Subsequent serological analysis allowed the identification of the pathogen as a subgroup I strain of Cucumber mosaic virus (CMV). These results were confirmed by antigen capture - reverse transcription - polymerase chain reaction with specific CMV primers, and digestion with a restriction enzyme. This is the first report of CMV infecting V. cornuta in Argentina.

ABSTRACT Brazilian pig population is made up of several naturalized breeds; among them the Piau breed is known for its rusticity and large fat stores. The naturalized breeds, in comparison with commercial ones, may have an increased resistance to diseases circulating in their territory. Thus, this study aimed to verify if there are differences between the serologic profile against Porcine circovirus 2 (PCV2) of Piau pigs and that of a commercial breed from a farm naturally infected by PCV2. The serum viral load was measured by qPCR, and levels of anti-PCV2 antibodies were measured by ELISA. The results showed that the serum viral load was similar across all animals. However, Piau piglets showed higher levels of antibodies compared to commercial piglets (P=...

Experimental infection with Brazilian Newcastle disease virus strain in pigeons and chickens BJM
Carrasco,Adriano de Oliveira Torres; Seki,Meire Christina; Benevenute,Jyan Lucas; Ikeda,Priscila; Pinto,Aramis Augusto.
Abstract This study was designed with the goal of adding as much information as possible about the role of pigeons (Columba livia) and chickens (Gallus gallus) in Newcastle disease virus epidemiology. These species were submitted to direct experimental infection with Newcastle disease virus to evaluate interspecies transmission and virus-host relationships. The results obtained in four experimental models were analyzed by hemagglutination inhibition and reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction for detection of virus shedding. These techniques revealed that both avian species, when previously immunized with a low pathogenic Newcastle disease virus strain (LaSota), developed high antibody titers that significantly reduced virus shedding after...

First survey for detecting the presence of human herpesvirus 8 infection (HHV-8) in Maputo, Mozambique BJID
Caterino-de-Araujo,Adele; Manuel,Rolanda Carmen Rafael; Bianco,Rosana Del; Santos-Fortuna,Elizabeth; Magri,Mariana Cavalheiro; Silva,Joyce Matie Kinoshita; Bastos,Rui.
Human herpesvirus 8 (HHV-8), the etiological agent of Kaposi's sarcoma (KS), is endemic in parts of the sub-Saharan, and KS has increased concomitantly with the HIV/AIDS epidemic. In Mozambique (MZ), no data concerning HHV-8 infection was available, thus the main of this work was to investigate, for the first time, the presence of HHV-8 infection in Maputo, MZ. Latent and lytic HHV-8-specific antibodies were assessed in blood samples from 189 individuals from the Central Hospital of Maputo, MZ, using "in-house" immunofluorescence assays conducted in São Paulo, Brazil. The results obtained were analyzed according to socio-demographic and clinical variables using the Chi-square test and logistic regression. An HHV-8 seropositivity of 1.8% and 9.7% was...

Latent human herpesvirus - 8 (HHV-8) infection in female commercial sex workers from Imbituba, Santa Catarina, Brazil BJID
Caterino-de-Araujo,Adele; Santos-Fortuna,Elizabeth; Magri,Mariana Cavalheiro; Schuelter-Trevisol,Fabiana; Silva,Marcos Vinicius.
Human herpesvirus 8 (HHV-8) infection was identified in 6 out of 90 (6.7%) female commercial sex workers from Imbituba, Santa Catarina, and was associated to age. Frequencies of 5.6% of anti-latent and 3.3% of anti-lytic antibodies were detected. Considering non-endemic areas from Brazil, the anti-latent antibodies frequency seems elevated and requires further investigation on referent female population.

Genital schistosomiasis mansoni concomitant to genital tumor in areas of low endemicity: challenging diagnosis BJID
Cavalcanti,Marta G; Gonçalves,Margareth MI; Barreto,Magali M; Silva,Aline Helen da; Madi,Kalil; Peralta,José Mauro; Igreja,Ricardo P.
Genital infection by Schistosoma mansoni is usually misdiagnosed in individuals who reside in, or travel to endemic areas. We describe two cases of genital tumor associated with S. mansoni infection manifested by methrorragy. Surgical specimens revealed leiomyomas in both cases associated with S. mansoni. In one of them, granulomas were found in the ovary and in the other they were found in the uterine tube. Although none presented intestinal/hepatic disease, fecal egg excretion was detected in one. Both had elevated pretreatment antibody reactivity to S. mansoni antigen, but follow-up showed different outcomes. Schistosomiasis should be considered as a diagnosis in individuals with methrorragy residing in or having traveled to endemic areas. Since...

Tomato chlorotic spot virus in hydroponically-grown lettuce in São Paulo State, Brazil Trop. Plant Pathol.
Colariccio,Addolorata; Eiras,Marcelo; Chaves,Alexandre L. R.; Harakava,Ricardo; Chagas,César M..
In the regions of Campinas and Sumaré, São Paulo, Brazil, hidroponically grown crops of Lettuce (Lactuca sativa) cv. Verônica, which showed virus-like symptoms were examined by electron microscope, biological, serological and molecular tests. Pleomorphic, enveloped particles (80-100 nm in diameter) were always detected in these samples. Experimentally inoculated host plants, including lettuce, reacted with tospoviruses-induced symptoms. Some differences were observed in Gomphrena globosa, which reacted by showing local lesions and systemic mosaic. Two isolates of Tomato chlorotic spot virus (TCSV) were identified by DAS-ELISA and by RT-PCR. The sequencing and alignment of the RT-PCR coat protein amplified fragments have indicated a high degree of homology...

Dengue: a review of the laboratory tests a clinician must know to achieve a correct diagnosis BJID
De Paula,Sérgio Oliveira; Fonseca,Benedito Antônio Lopes da.
Dengue is the most important disease caused by an arbovirus (1, 2, 3 and 4 serotypes) worldwide, especially in the tropical and sub-tropical regions. Its clinical manifestations range from asymptomatic infections to a severe disease characterized by hemorrhage and shock. The incidence of dengue virus activity in the Americas has substantially increased from 1980 to 1994. In Brazil, the increase in the incidence of dengue is especially linked to the dissemination of Aedes aegypti. Thus, a rapid and accurate dengue diagnosis is of paramount importance for effective control of dengue outbreaks [8]. Five serological tests have been used for the diagnosis of dengue infection: hemagglutination-inhibition (HI), complement fixation (CF), neutralization test (NT),...

The Amazonian manatee (Trichechus inunguis) is an aquatic mammal that inhabits freshwater environments and is endemic to the Amazon Basin. The presence of Toxoplasma gondii antibodies was investigated in 19 manatees in one rescue unit in the northern region of Peru. Antibodies to T. gondii were detected in 12 (63.2 %) of 19 animals by using the modified agglutination test (titer, 1:25), and no association between sex and age of the animals and the presence of T. gondii antibodies was observed (p < 0.05). The results suggest a contamination by T. gondii oocysts in the aquatic environment where these animals live.
